Samarkand

Aksaray ('White Palace') was the name of Timur's Samarkand residence, recently excavated near Gur-e-Amir. The uncovered foundations, tiled corridors, and fragments of wall decoration reveal the scale of Timurid royal architecture. The site is partially sheltered under a modern covering and is still being actively excavated.

Samarkand's Silk Carpet Workshop is a family-run atelier where visitors can watch master weavers create traditional Uzbek silk and wool carpets by hand. The workshop produces both classic Timurid-pattern carpets and modern designs using natural dyes derived from pomegranate, walnut, and indigo. The showroom displays finished carpets for sale.

Gur-e-Amir ('Tomb of the King') is the mausoleum of Timur (Tamerlane), the 14th-century conqueror who made Samarkand his imperial capital. The building's fluted azure dome, 12 metres in diameter, became the architectural prototype for later Mughal tombs including the Taj Mahal. Inside, the cenotaphs of Timur and his descendants rest beneath an onyx-and-jade ceiling of intricate geometric design.

Registan Square is the monumental heart of Samarkand, framed by three grand madrasas — Ulugh Beg (1420), Sher-Dor (1636), and Tilla-Kari (1660). The ensemble is widely considered one of the finest examples of Islamic architecture in the world and is the centrepiece of Samarkand's UNESCO World Heritage designation. The square was once the commercial and civic hub of the Timurid Empire.

Bibi-Khanym Mosque was the largest mosque in the Islamic world when Timur completed it in 1404, built to rival the grandest structures of his conquered territories. The entrance portal soars 35 metres high, and the main dome once reached 40 metres. Though partially ruined by earthquakes and time, extensive restoration has returned much of its imposing scale.

The Ulugh Beg Observatory, built in the 1420s, was the foremost astronomical facility of the medieval world. Though only the underground arc of a giant sextant survives, it was here that Ulugh Beg compiled his Zij-i Sultani star catalogue — the most accurate astronomical table until Tycho Brahe's work 150 years later. A museum at the site explains the scientific achievements.

Shah-i-Zinda ('The Living King') is a necropolis of mausoleums lining a narrow medieval street on the slopes of Afrosiyob hill. Dating from the 9th to the 19th century, the complex contains some of the finest examples of Timurid majolica tilework in existence. Each mausoleum showcases a different period and style, creating a living timeline of Islamic decorative arts.

The Imam al-Bukhari Memorial Complex honours Muhammad al-Bukhari (810–870), compiler of the Sahih al-Bukhari — the most authoritative collection of Hadith in Sunni Islam. The complex, located 25 km northeast of Samarkand, includes a grand mosque, a mausoleum, a library, and landscaped gardens. It is one of the most important Islamic pilgrimage sites in Central Asia.

The Afrosiyob Museum sits on the edge of the ancient Sogdian city of Afrosiyob (Maracanda), which predates Timurid Samarkand by over a millennium. The museum's centerpiece is a suite of 7th-century Sogdian wall paintings discovered in 1965 — vivid tableaux depicting a diplomatic reception, Chinese boats, and processions that are among the most important pre-Islamic artworks in Central Asia.

Chorsu Bazaar is a domed crossroads market in the old town, smaller and more local than Siab Bazaar but offering a more authentic shopping experience. The market specializes in spices, dried herbs, nuts, and household goods used by Samarkand residents. The characteristic domed structure provides shade from the intense summer heat.

The Samarkand State Museum of History is housed in a modern building near the city center, covering the region's history from prehistoric flint tools through the Sogdian, Timurid, and Russian colonial eras. The collection includes archaeological finds from Afrosiyob, Timurid ceramics, and ethnographic displays on 19th-century Samarkand life.

Khoja Doniyor Mausoleum, popularly known as Daniel's Tomb, is venerated by Muslims, Christians, and Jews as the resting place of the Biblical prophet Daniel. The 18-metre-long sarcophagus — said to grow over time — sits inside a modern shrine building beside the Siab River. A sacred pistachio tree and natural spring add to the site's mystical atmosphere.

Samarkand Boulevard (officially University Boulevard) is a 1.5-km tree-lined pedestrian promenade connecting the modern city center to the approach to the Registan. It is the city's main evening gathering place, with fountains, benches, and cafés lining both sides. The boulevard offers a pleasant walking route between the new and old towns.

Samarkand's Old Town encompasses the traditional mahalla neighborhoods radiating from the Registan and Bibi-Khanym Mosque. Narrow clay-walled lanes open onto vine-shaded courtyards, neighborhood mosques, and family workshops producing ceramics, embroidery, and metalwork. Walking these streets offers a glimpse of daily life unchanged for generations.

Siab Bazaar is Samarkand's main traditional market, sprawling in the shadow of the Bibi-Khanym Mosque. The bazaar is the best place to buy Samarkand's legendary golden non (flatbread), dried fruits, nuts, spices, and locally produced sweets. The market has operated on this spot for centuries, serving as the commercial anchor of the old city.

Ishratkhona is a ruined 15th-century mausoleum in the southeastern part of Samarkand, believed to have housed the tombs of Timurid princesses. Though structurally compromised by earthquakes, traces of original wall paintings and tile decoration survive, offering a haunting glimpse of Timurid funerary art before restoration.

Khoja Abdi Darun is a working mosque and mausoleum complex in a residential neighbourhood south of the old town. It features fine 15th-century Timurid tile decoration on its portal and prayer hall but receives far fewer visitors than the headline monuments. The complex is a genuine neighbourhood mosque where daily prayers continue.

The Central Park of Culture and Recreation is Samarkand's main urban green space, offering shaded walking paths, children's amusement rides, and a small Ferris wheel with views of the city. The park is a gathering place for local families, especially on warm evenings, and provides a relaxing counterpoint to the intensity of monument-hopping.

A cluster of family-run ceramic studios near the Registan produces traditional Uzbek blue-and-white pottery using techniques passed down through generations. Visitors can watch artisans shape, glaze, and fire plates, bowls, and decorative tiles, and purchase finished pieces directly from the workshop floor.

The hillside terrace above Daniel's Tomb provides a scenic viewpoint overlooking the Siab River valley, the grassy mounds of Afrosiyob, and the Shah-i-Zinda necropolis. This elevated spot offers one of the best unobstructed panoramas in Samarkand, particularly beautiful in late afternoon light.
