Daniel's Tomb (Khoja Doniyor Mausoleum)

Overview

Khoja Doniyor Mausoleum, popularly known as Daniel's Tomb, is venerated by Muslims, Christians, and Jews as the resting place of the Biblical prophet Daniel. The 18-metre-long sarcophagus — said to grow over time — sits inside a modern shrine building beside the Siab River. A sacred pistachio tree and natural spring add to the site's mystical atmosphere.

History

Timur was said to have brought a relic of the Prophet Daniel from Susa (in modern Iran) during his 1399 campaign. The site became a multi-faith pilgrimage destination. The current shrine building was constructed by the Uzbek government in the 2000s as part of Samarkand's heritage restoration.

• Tip 1: The site is at the edge of the Afrosiyob hill — combine it with the museum and archaeological mounds.
• Tip 2: Remove shoes before entering the shrine chamber; women should cover their heads.
