Kukeldash Madrasa

Overview

Kukeldash Madrasa is the largest madrasa at Lyabi-Hauz and one of the biggest in Central Asia. Built in 1568, it forms the northern boundary of the ensemble and offers rooftop views over the old city.

History

Built in 1568–1569 by the vizier Kulbaba Kukeldash during the Shaybanid dynasty, it was the largest madrasa in Bukhara at the time of construction. During the Soviet period, it was used as a warehouse. It has since been partially restored and returned to educational use, with some cells converted to artisan workshops.

Visitor Tips

• Tip 1: Ask to climb to the roof — the view over Lyabi-Hauz square is one of the best panoramas in Bukhara.
• Tip 2: Free to enter the courtyard; a small fee for the rooftop.
• Duration: 15–20 minutes.
