Overview
Phuket Aquarium is operated by the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources on Cape Panwa, the island's southeastern tip. It houses over 150 species of marine life from the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, including sharks, sea turtles, and colourful reef fish.
Highlights
- Underwater Tunnel: A walk-through acrylic tunnel passes through a tank of leopard sharks, stingrays, and giant groupers.
- Sea Turtle Conservation: The centre breeds and releases endangered sea turtles — visitors can see juvenile turtles in the outdoor pools.
- Touch Pool: A hands-on pool allows children to handle sea cucumbers, starfish, and hermit crabs.
History
Established in 1983 as a research station of the Phuket Marine Biological Centre, the aquarium opened to the public to raise awareness of marine conservation along the Andaman coast.
