Overview
Khao Phra Thaeo Royal Wildlife and Forest Reserve protects Phuket's last virgin lowland rainforest — 2,235 hectares of dense jungle in the island's northeast interior. It includes two waterfalls, a gibbon rehabilitation centre, and trails through old-growth forest.
Highlights
- Bang Pae Waterfall: The larger of two falls in the park, cascading into a natural swimming pool surrounded by jungle — best after June rains.
- Ton Sai Waterfall: A quieter, smaller waterfall with easier access and picnic areas.
- White-backed Palm: The park is the only known habitat of the Kerriodoxa elegans palm, a species endemic to southern Thailand.
History
The forest was gazetted as a protected area in 1957 by royal decree. The Gibbon Rehabilitation Project was established within the park in 1992 to rehabilitate gibbons confiscated from the illegal pet trade.
Visitor Tips
- Leeches: Wear long socks and apply insect repellent, especially during the wet season (May–October).
- Combine: Pair with a visit to the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project at the park entrance.
- Duration: 2–3 hours.
