Overview
Karon Beach stretches over 3 kilometres of wide, squeaky-sand shoreline — named for the quartz crystals that squeak underfoot when dry. It is far less developed than neighbouring Patong, offering a more relaxed seaside experience.
Highlights
- Squeaky Sand: The distinctive quartz-rich sand produces an audible squeak when walked on — a phenomenon found on only a handful of beaches worldwide.
- Wide Open Space: Even in peak season, the beach never feels crowded thanks to its generous width.
- Beachfront Road: A 3-km promenade ideal for running, cycling, or sunset strolls.
History
Karon was one of Phuket's earliest beach tourism areas, developed in the late 1980s. It has remained relatively low-rise due to building height restrictions imposed in the 2000s.
Visitor Tips
- Swimming: Generally safe November–April; undertows possible May–October.
- Karon Temple Market: A twice-weekly market at Wat Suwan Khiri Khet (Tuesday and Friday evenings).
