Big Buddha Phuket

Overview

The Big Buddha is a 45-metre-tall Maravija Buddha statue perched atop Nakkerd Hill at 400 metres elevation, visible from much of southern Phuket. Clad in white Burmese marble, it is one of the island's most recognisable landmarks and an active construction site that has been under development since 2004.

Highlights

• 360° Views: The hilltop platform delivers sweeping panoramas over Chalong Bay, Kata, Karon, and the offshore islands.
• Smaller Buddha Images: The base area includes a 12-metre brass seated Buddha and a walking Buddha in the Sukhothai style.
• Bell Wall: Visitors can strike brass bells lining the terrace for good luck.

History

The project was initiated in 2004 by Phra Khru Wisit Niyomkhun, the abbot of Wat Kittisangkaram, funded entirely by private donations. The marble cladding was sourced from quarries near Sagyin Hill in Myanmar.

Visitor Tips

• Road: The steep, winding access road is well-paved but has sharp hairpin bends — drive carefully.
• Sunset: A spectacular spot for sunset photos, far less crowded than Promthep Cape.
• Duration: 30–60 minutes.
