Great Armoury

Overview

The Great Armoury (Wielka Zbrojownia) is one of the finest examples of Dutch Mannerist architecture outside the Netherlands. Built between 1600 and 1609, this lavishly decorated arsenal building served as an arms depot and military warehouse for the Free City of Gdańsk.

• Street Setting: The building anchors the view down Piwna Street toward St. Mary's Church.

History

Designed by Antonis van Opbergen and built by Jan Strakowski, the armoury was part of the city's extensive fortification system. The building now houses the Academy of Fine Arts.

• Tip 1: The exterior is the main attraction — photograph from Piwna Street for the best angle.
• Tip 2: The interior is usually not open to visitors as it houses the art academy.
