Sumilon Island is a 24-hectare island off the southeastern coast of Cebu near Oslob, renowned for its shifting white sandbar and crystal-clear waters. It was the site of the first marine protected area established in the Philippines in 1974, and its coral reefs have recovered significantly since protection began.
Sumilon Island was the pilot site for the Philippines' marine conservation program in 1974, established by Silliman University marine biologist Angel Alcala. After years of study, the sanctuary demonstrated that no-take zones dramatically improve reef health and fish populations. Today, it serves as a model for marine protected areas nationwide.
