Overview
MUDAM (Musee d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean) is Luxembourg's flagship contemporary art museum, housed in a luminous limestone-and-glass building designed by I. M. Pei atop the remains of Fort Thungen on the Kirchberg plateau.
Highlights
- I. M. Pei Architecture: Angular glass roofs flood the galleries with natural light, echoing the fortress walls below.
- Rotating Exhibitions: Large-scale installations, video art, and design shows that change every few months.
- Museum Shop & Cafe: Design-forward bookshop and a terrace cafe with views toward the old town.
History
Planning began in 1990 after Grand Duke Jean donated his modern-art collection. Pei's design was completed in 2006 after a prolonged construction phase that integrated surviving Fort Thungen bastions into the foundation.
