Yuexiu Park

Overview

Yuexiu Park (越秀公园) is Guangzhou's largest and most historic public green space, covering 86 hectares across three hills in the city's central Yuexiu District. Home to the legendary Five Rams Statue — the symbol of Guangzhou — the park weaves together ancient battlements, lakes, and landscaped gardens.

Highlights

• Five Rams Statue (五羊石像): The 11-metre stone sculpture depicting the city's founding myth is Guangzhou's most photographed monument.
• Zhenhai Tower: A 600-year-old red sandstone watchtower at the park's summit, now housing the Guangzhou Museum.
• Beixiu Lake: A calm lake ideal for paddle-boating, crossed by graceful arched bridges.

History

The park's hilltop fortifications date to the Ming dynasty (1380). It was formalized as a public park in 1927 and expanded during the 1950s to incorporate surrounding gardens.

Visitor Tips

• Entrance: Free admission to the park; small fees for the museum and boating.
• Morning: Join locals practising tai chi on the terraces at dawn.
• Duration: 1.5–2.5 hours.
