Nansha Wetland Park

Overview

Nansha Wetland Park (南沙湿地公园) is a 10,000-hectare coastal wetland reserve at the southern tip of Guangzhou, where the Pearl River meets the South China Sea. It is one of China's most important staging grounds for migratory waterfowl.

Highlights

• Birdwatching: Over 200 species recorded, including black-faced spoonbills, egrets, and Mandarin ducks during winter migration.
• Mangrove Boardwalk: A 2-km elevated trail through mangrove forests and reed beds.
• Lotus Ponds: In summer the park blazes with thousands of flowering lotus plants.

History

The wetlands were established as a nature reserve in 2005 after rapid urbanization threatened the Pearl River Delta's remaining estuarine habitats. It was upgraded to a national wetland park in 2012.

Visitor Tips

• Best Season: November–March for migratory birds; July–August for lotus blooms.
• Bring: Binoculars and insect repellent.
• Duration: 2.5–3 hours.
