The Thomas Jefferson Memorial is a neoclassical domed monument on the southwest shore of the Tidal Basin, dedicated to the third President of the United States and principal author of the Declaration of Independence.
Designed by John Russell Pope and completed in 1943, the memorial was modeled after the Pantheon in Rome, reflecting Jefferson's admiration for classical architecture. Jefferson himself designed the Virginia State Capitol and the University of Virginia Rotunda using the same Palladian principles.
