Overview
Constitution Gardens is a 50-acre landscaped park on the National Mall, featuring a small lake with a memorial island. The park was created from land that had been covered by temporary Navy Department buildings during World War I and II.
Highlights
- Memorial to the 56 Signers: An island in the lake honoring the signers of the Declaration of Independence with gold-leaf signatures on individual granite blocks.
- Lakeside Walks: Peaceful paths along the 6.75-acre kidney-shaped lake.
- Picnic Area: One of the few spots on the Mall where visitors can relax on grass under shade trees.
History
Dedicated in 1976 as part of the nation's bicentennial celebration, replacing temporary wartime buildings that had occupied the site since 1918. Designed by landscape architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill.
