Overview
Officially known as the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, the Ballard Locks provide a navigable connection for ships passing between the saltwater of Puget Sound and the freshwater of Lakes Union and Washington. It's a fascinating look at nautical engineering and local ecology.
Highlights

- The Locks: Watch a mix of massive commercial vessels and small pleasure yachts be raised and lowered dynamically.

History
Built by the US Army Corps of Engineers and opened in 1917 to maintain the water levels of Seattle's freshwater lakes.
