Balboa Park is a 1,200-acre urban cultural park — the largest in San Diego — encompassing 17 museums, performing arts venues, gardens, trails, and the famous San Diego Zoo. Its Spanish Colonial Revival architecture creates an atmosphere unlike any other American park.
Set aside as a public park in 1868, Balboa Park was developed for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition. Architect Bertram Goodhue designed the Spanish Colonial buildings that define the park's character. A second exposition in 1935 added more structures.
