Portland's food cart pods are clusters of mobile kitchens serving cuisine from around the world at affordable prices. With over 500 carts citywide, Portland has the highest food-cart density of any American city.

History

Portland's food cart culture exploded in the 2000s due to the city's permissive zoning, low startup costs, and food-obsessed population. While the downtown Alder Street pod closed in 2019 for redevelopment, pods throughout the city continue to thrive.

• Cash is still preferred at many carts, though card acceptance is increasing.
