Pioneer Courthouse Square is Portland's central public plaza, known as "Portland's Living Room." The one-block amphitheater hosts over 300 events annually, from farmers' markets to concerts to the annual Festival of the Last Minute Christmas tree lighting.
The site has been Portland's commercial center since the 1850s. The original Portland Hotel stood here from 1890 to 1951, followed by a parking garage. A grassroots campaign raised $1.5 million (one brick at a time) to create the square, which opened in 1984.
