Overview

The Philadelphia Zoo is the oldest zoo in the United States, opened in 1874. Home to over 1,300 animals on 42 acres in Fairmount Park, it pioneered the innovative Zoo360 animal exploration trail system.

History

Chartered in 1859 but delayed by the Civil War, the zoo opened on July 1, 1874. It was the first institution to successfully breed orangutans and chimpanzees in captivity and has been a leader in wildlife conservation.
