Manayunk is a hilly riverside neighborhood along the Schuylkill River in northwest Philadelphia, known for its Main Street corridor of independent boutiques, restaurants, and bars. The former mill town retains its industrial character.
The name comes from the Lenape word for "where we go to drink," referencing the Schuylkill River. The neighborhood boomed during the Industrial Revolution as a textile mill center. After decades of decline, Main Street revitalized in the 1990s.
