Eastern State Penitentiary is the ruins of the world's first true penitentiary, opened in 1829. Its crumbling cellblocks and imposing Gothic façade create one of the most atmospheric historic sites in America. Al Capone's restored cell is a highlight.
Designed by John Haviland and opened in 1829, Eastern State pioneered the solitary confinement system that became a model for over 300 prisons worldwide. It housed infamous inmates including Al Capone and bank robber Willie Sutton before closing in 1970.
