The Cabildo

Overview

The Cabildo is a landmark building on Jackson Square where the Louisiana Purchase was signed in 1803. Now a museum, it chronicles Louisiana history from colonial times through Reconstruction.

History

Completed in 1799 as the seat of Spanish colonial government, the Cabildo later served as New Orleans City Hall and the Louisiana Supreme Court. It became a museum in 1911.
