USS Constitution, launched in 1797, is the world's oldest commissioned warship still afloat. Permanently docked in Charlestown Navy Yard, "Old Ironsides" earned its nickname during the War of 1812 when British cannonballs reportedly bounced off its thick oak hull.
One of six original frigates authorized by the Naval Act of 1794, Constitution fought in the Barbary Wars and the War of 1812, winning all 33 of her engagements. She was saved from scrapping in 1830 after Oliver Wendell Holmes's poem "Old Ironsides" sparked public outcry.
