The Old State House (1713) is the oldest surviving public building in Boston and the site where the Declaration of Independence was first read to Bostonians on July 18, 1776. Today it operates as a museum of Revolutionary-era history.
Built in 1713 as the seat of colonial government, the Old State House hosted the Massachusetts Assembly and was the center of events leading to the Revolution. After independence, it served variously as a commercial building, city hall, and Masonic lodge before becoming a museum in 1882.
