Bunker Hill Monument

Overview

The Bunker Hill Monument is a 221-foot granite obelisk commemorating the Battle of Bunker Hill (fought on Breed's Hill) on June 17, 1775 — one of the first major engagements of the American Revolution. Climbing its 294 steps rewards visitors with panoramic views of Boston.

History

Dedicated in 1843 after 17 years of construction, the monument was designed by Solomon Willard. It was one of the first major obelisks built in the United States, predating the Washington Monument. Daniel Webster delivered the dedication address.

• No elevator: The only way up is climbing all 294 steps; the stairwell is narrow.
