San Miguelito Archaeological Site

Overview

Directly adjacent to the Museo Maya de Cancún, San Miguelito preserves the largest residential Maya complex in the Cancún area, with over 40 structures spanning roughly 8 hectares of restored jungle paths. Museum admission includes entry to the site.

Highlights

• Chaak Palace: The tallest structure, an 8-metre pyramid that once served as a temple to the rain god.
• Dragon Building: A low platform with intricate serpent carvings on its balustrade.
• Jungle Trail: A shaded 1-km boardwalk connecting ruins through native tropical forest.

History

Occupied from the Late Post-Classic period (1250–1550 CE), San Miguelito was a satellite settlement of the Isla Mujeres trading route, housing around 300 residents. It was discovered in the early 19th century but only systematically excavated from 2006 to 2012.
