Cenote Ik Kil

Overview

Cenote Ik Kil is a collapsed limestone sinkhole near Chichén Itzá, with a swimming area 26 metres below ground level surrounded by hanging vines and small waterfalls dripping from the circular opening above. It is one of the most photographed cenotes in Mexico.

History

Ik Kil was sacred to the ancient Maya, who used cenotes as portals to the underworld (Xibalba) and for rain-god offerings. The site was developed for tourism in the 2000s with staircases and changing rooms while preserving its natural structure.

• Visit after Chichén Itzá: Located just 3 km east, it's the natural afternoon stop.
• Life vests required: Mandatory for all swimmers — provided free.
