The Quartiere di Santa Maria is the quieter southwestern quadrant of the walled city, centred around the cathedral and the city's southern gates. Less visited than the northern area around Piazza Anfiteatro, it retains an authentic residential character.
Historically this was the religious and administrative heart of Lucca, centred on the cathedral (San Martino) and the bishop's palace. Its less commercial character persists today.
