Overview

Büyükada, the largest of Istanbul's car-free Princes' Islands, is best explored by bicycle—pedalling past wooden Ottoman mansions, through pine-forested hills and along the waterfront promenade.

History

The Princes' Islands have served as a retreat from the city since Byzantine times. Motor vehicles have been banned since the 1990s, with electric vehicles gradually replacing horse-drawn carriages.

• Tip: Take the fast ferry from Kabataş (35 min). Rent bicycles at the pier.
• Duration: 3–4 hours (half day).
