Janggi Peninsula Coastal Trail

Overview

The Janggi Peninsula Coastal Trail is a 6 km walking route that traces the rugged eastern shoreline of the Janggi peninsula south of Guryongpo. The undeveloped path passes rocky headlands, tidal pools, hidden coves, and windswept pines, offering some of the most dramatic coastal scenery on Korea's east coast.

Highlights

• Rocky Coastline: Jagged volcanic rock formations, sea stacks, and blowholes punctuate the trail.
• Tidal Pools: At low tide, shallow pools teem with sea anemones, crabs, and small fish.
• Isolation: Unlike Pohang's urban beaches, this stretch of coast sees few visitors — genuine solitude is possible even in summer.

History

The trail was developed by the Gyeongsangbuk-do provincial government as part of the East Coast Trail network (Haeparang-gil). It follows traditional fishing paths that connected small coastal settlements before modern roads were built.

Visitor Tips

• Sturdy shoes: The trail is rocky and uneven in places — hiking boots recommended.
• Check tides: Some sections are impassable at high tide; check conditions before setting out.
• Duration: 2–2.5 hours for the full out-and-back trail.
