Oreung Royal Tombs

Overview

Oreung (Five Tombs) is a serene cluster of five ancient burial mounds in a pine forest south of Gyeongju city centre, traditionally believed to contain the remains of Silla's legendary founder, Pak Hyeokgeose, and his queen. The site is one of the most atmospheric and least crowded royal tomb complexes in Gyeongju.

Highlights

• Founding Legend: According to the Samguk Sagi, Hyeokgeose was born from a gourd-shaped egg found by village elders in 69 BCE — the myth is depicted on interpretive panels at the site.
• Pine Forest Atmosphere: The five grass-covered mounds sit beneath tall pines, with dappled light creating a contemplative mood.
• Sajik Altar: A stone altar nearby where Confucian rites honouring the Silla founders are still performed annually.

History

The five tombs are attributed to Pak Hyeokgeose (r. 57 BCE – 4 CE) and his queen Aryeong, along with three early Silla rulers: Namhae, Yuri, and Pasa. The site was formally maintained as a royal ancestral ground throughout the Goryeo and Joseon periods and continues to receive ceremonial honours.

Visitor Tips

• Peaceful morning visit: Best in early morning when sunlight filters through the pines.
• Near Poseokjeong: A 10-minute walk north brings you to the floating-cup pavilion site.
• Duration: 30–45 minutes.
