Powai Lake

Overview

Powai Lake is a man-made reservoir in northeast Mumbai, fringed by the IIT Bombay campus and the Aarey forest. Its placid waters — home to wild crocodiles and migratory birds — offer a rare natural setting within the sprawling suburbs.

History

Constructed in 1891 by the British as a water supply for the adjacent industrial areas, Powai Lake was later stocked with crocodiles in the 1970s. The reptiles thrived, and the lake is now their protected habitat.

• Do not swim: Crocodiles are present.
