Currency Building

Overview

The Currency Building is a restored Italian Renaissance-style edifice on BBD Bagh, originally built in 1833 as the Opium Warehouse before becoming a currency mint. Its terracotta façade with Ionic columns is one of the finest in Kolkata's Dalhousie Square.

• Renaissance colonnade: A long two-storey arcade of arched windows and Ionic pilasters.
• Restored interiors: Recently renovated by the ASI, revealing original ceiling frescoes.
• BBD Bagh setting: Flanked by the GPO and Writers' Building, forming a cohesive colonial ensemble.

History

Built in 1833, it served as the Government Opium Agent's warehouse before being converted to a currency depot. A devastating fire in 2006 was followed by a full restoration completed in 2020.
