Overview

Jakarta's Car Free Day (CFD) closes a 6 km stretch of Jl. Sudirman and Jl. Thamrin to vehicles every Sunday morning, transforming the city's main arterial road into a massive pedestrian promenade for jogging, cycling, aerobics, and street-food stalls.

History

Launched in 2007 under Governor Fauzi Bowo, Jakarta's Car Free Day was initially a pilot project. Its popularity made it permanent, and it's now one of the city's most beloved weekly rituals, drawing hundreds of thousands every Sunday.

Visitor Tips

• Sunday only: 6:00–11:00 AM. The road reopens to traffic at 11:00 sharp.
• Rent a bike at one of the many pop-up vendors along the route.
• Duration: 1.5–2 hours.
