Zwack Unicum Museum

Overview

The Zwack Unicum Heritage Centre occupies the working distillery where Hungary's most famous herbal liqueur has been produced since 1840. A guided tour traces the Zwack family's 230-year story — from court physician Dr. Zwack's first recipe offered to Emperor Joseph II in 1790 to the family's Cold War exile and triumphant return after 1989.

History

Dr. Zwack presented his herbal digestif to Habsburg Emperor Joseph II in 1790, who allegedly exclaimed "Das ist ein Unikum!" When the communists nationalised the factory in 1948, Péter Zwack smuggled the secret recipe to Italy and produced Unicum abroad until returning to Hungary in 1989 to reclaim the distillery.
