Hold Street Market
Hold Utcai Vásárcsarnok (Hold Street Market Hall) is a neighbourhood food market in the Lipótváros district, far less touristy than the Great Market Hall but equally atmospheric. Built in 1896 as one of Budapest's five original covered markets, it remains a daily shopping stop for locals buying fresh produce, Hungarian salami, cheeses, and langos from family-run stalls.
Overview
Hold Utcai Vásárcsarnok (Hold Street Market Hall) is a neighbourhood food market in the Lipótváros district, far less touristy than the Great Market Hall but equally atmospheric. Built in 1896 as one of Budapest's five original covered markets, it remains a daily shopping stop for locals buying fresh produce, Hungarian salami, cheeses, and langos from family-run stalls.
Highlights
- Local Charcuterie: Several stands specialise in Pick salami, mangalica pork, and Hungarian smoked sausages.
- Fresh Langos Counter: A popular stall serving freshly fried langos topped with sour cream and cheese — a fraction of the tourist-area price.
- Art Nouveau Ironwork: The original 1896 iron-and-glass structure has been beautifully maintained.
History
Designed by Samu Pecz — the same architect behind the Great Market Hall — Hold Street Market was one of five covered markets opened simultaneously in 1896 for Budapest's Millennium celebrations. While the others were renovated for tourism, Hold Street retained its primarily local character.
Visitor Tips
- Go before noon: The freshest selection is in the morning; many stalls close by early afternoon.
- Combine with Szabadság tér: The market is a 2-minute walk from Liberty Square.
- Duration: 30–45 minutes.
