Lingqu Canal

Overview

The Lingqu Canal is one of the world's three oldest canals, built in 214 BC during the Qin dynasty to connect the Yangtze and Pearl River systems — enabling the military conquest of southern China.

History

Commissioned by Emperor Qin Shi Huang in 214 BC; the canal's plough-share dam is considered a masterpiece of ancient hydraulic engineering. Inscribed on the World Heritage Tentative List.
