The Romanov Palace is a 19th-century mansion built for Grand Duke Nikolai Romanov, a cousin of Tsar Alexander III who was exiled to Tashkent for stealing crown jewels. Its eclectic Art Nouveau interiors make it one of Tashkent's most unusual historic buildings.
Built in the 1890s for Grand Duke Nikolai Konstantinovich Romanov, who was exiled to Turkestan in 1874 for stealing diamonds from his mother's icon. Despite his disgrace, Nikolai became a beloved figure in Tashkent, funding irrigation projects and cultural institutions. After the revolution, the palace served as a Young Pioneers house.
