Amir Timur Square is Tashkent's central public square, anchored by the bronze equestrian statue of Tamerlane. The square is surrounded by the Hotel Uzbekistan, the Amir Timur Museum, and fountains, forming the symbolic heart of the modern city.
The square has been Tashkent's central point since the Russian Imperial era. It has held statues of Kaufmann (the Russian general), Stalin, Marx, and now Timur — each replacement reflecting the political winds. The current configuration dates to 1993, when Uzbekistan embraced Timur as a national hero after independence.
