The Amir Timur Museum is a grand rotunda dedicated to Tamerlane (Amir Timur), the 14th-century conqueror who built one of history's largest empires from his capital in Samarkand. The museum's striking blue dome and ornate interior rival the exhibits themselves.
Opened in 1996 to mark the 660th anniversary of Timur's birth, the museum was a centerpiece of Uzbekistan's post-independence nation-building. Timur was rehabilitated from Soviet-era condemnation to become the national symbol. The building was designed by Uzbek architects in a neo-Timurid style.
