Wat Umong

Overview

Wat Umong is a 700-year-old forest temple hidden in the foothills west of the city. Unlike Chiang Mai's glittering inner-city temples, Wat Umong is defined by its moss-covered brick tunnels, towering trees, and meditative silence—a genuine escape from the bustle.

History

King Mengrai commissioned the tunnels in the 1290s for a revered monk named Thera Jan who loved to wander in the forest. The temple fell into disuse for centuries before being restored in 1948 by Phra Bhuddhadhamma.

• Best time: Early morning or late afternoon when the forest light filters through the canopy.
