The Tribal Museum sits in Ratchamangkla Park northwest of the Old City and documents the cultures of Thailand's major highland minority groups—Hmong, Karen, Akha, Lahu, Lisu, and Mien. It's a respectful primer before visiting any hill-tribe community.
The museum was established by the Tribal Research Institute, founded in 1965 to study and support highlands peoples. The current building opened in 1997 and is administered by the Chiang Mai provincial government.
