Doi Suthep Viewpoint

Overview

The panoramic terrace at Wat Phra That Doi Suthep doubles as Chiang Mai's premier viewpoint, offering a sweeping vista over the entire city, the valley floor, and on clear days the distant Daen Lao mountain range. It is reached via the same 306-step naga staircase or a cable car.

History

Visitors have been climbing Doi Suthep for the view since at least the 1920s, when a motor road was first proposed. The current paved road was completed in 1935 thanks to a campaign led by Khruba Srivijaya, northern Thailand's most revered monk.

Visitor Tips

• Clear mornings: Haze is worst February–April (burning season); November–January has the clearest air.
• Cable car: A funicular operates for those who prefer not to climb the 306 steps (50 THB return).
• Duration: 20–30 minutes at the viewpoint.
