Overview
Doi Inthanon is the highest peak in Thailand at 2,565 metres, located about 90 km southwest of Chiang Mai. The national park surrounding it is a mosaic of cloud forests, waterfalls, hill-tribe villages, and the striking Twin Royal Pagodas at the summit ridge.
Highlights
- Twin Pagodas (Naphamethinidon & Naphapholphumisiri): Two modern chedis with manicured gardens and panoramic boardwalks.
- Wachirathan Waterfall: A powerful 80-metre cascade easily reached from the main road.
- Ang Ka Nature Trail: A short boardwalk through a rare sphagnum moss cloud forest at the summit.
History
The peak is named after King Inthawichayanon, the last ruler of Chiang Mai, who championed forest conservation. His ashes are interred in a stupa near the summit. The area was declared a national park in 1972.
