Chiang Mai National Museum

Overview

The Chiang Mai National Museum occupies a modern building on the Superhighway near Wat Jet Yot. It provides the most comprehensive overview of northern Thailand's history and culture, from prehistoric artefacts through the Lanna Kingdom to the modern era. It is the best starting point for understanding the region.

• Ethnographic Displays: Hill-tribe costumes, musical instruments, and ritual objects from the northern highlands.

History

The museum was established in 1973 and relocated to its current purpose-built facility in 1996. Its collection spans from the Neolithic period to the Rattanakosin era and is the principal repository for northern Thai archaeology.
