Overview
The Remarkables is a dramatic mountain range rising to 2,319 metres directly across Lake Wakatipu from Queenstown. In winter, it operates as a family-friendly ski field; in summer, the access road provides hiking access to alpine lakes and ridgelines.
Highlights
- Ski Field: Three distinct terrain areas — Homeward Bound (beginner), Shadow Basin (intermediate), and Lake Alta Chutes (advanced) — with reliable snow from June to October.
- Lake Alta: A stunning alpine tarn set in a glacial cirque at 1,800 metres, accessible via a 2-hour hike from the car park in summer.
- Mountain Views: The jagged silhouette of the Remarkables against the sky is Queenstown's most iconic vista.
History
The range was named by early surveyor Alexander Garvie in 1857 because its near-vertical faces run almost exactly north-south — "remarkable" in geological terms. The ski field opened in 1985 and is now operated by NZSki alongside Coronet Peak.
Visitor Tips
- Summer Hiking: The road opens for summer hiking access — the Lake Alta walk is one of the region's best alpine day walks.
- Learners: The Remarkables is considered more beginner-friendly than Coronet Peak.
- Duration: Full day for skiing; 3–4 hours for Lake Alta hike.
