Overview
Shotover Jet is Queenstown's original jet boat experience, operating since 1970 in the narrow, rocky Shotover River canyons. The bright red jet boats reach speeds of 90 km/h while performing 360-degree spins just centimetres from canyon walls.
Highlights
- Canyon Run: The jet boat threads through the narrow Shotover River canyons at high speed, passing rock walls that are barely wider than the boat.
- 360° Spins: Dramatic full-rotation spins at speed are a signature of the experience — guaranteed to drench everyone.
- Scenic Canyon: The Shotover River canyon features dramatic schist rock formations and occasional glimpses of old goldfield relics.
History
Founded in 1970 by the Johnstone family, Shotover Jet was one of the first commercial jet boat operations in the world. New Zealand inventor Sir William Hamilton developed the jet boat in the 1950s specifically for navigating the country's shallow, braided rivers.
