Overview
Kiwi Birdlife Park is a compact conservation facility at the base of the Skyline Gondola, dedicated to preserving endangered New Zealand bird species. It offers one of the best opportunities in the South Island to see a live kiwi in a naturalistic nocturnal enclosure.
Highlights
- Kiwi Encounter: A darkened enclosure recreates the native bush environment where visitors can quietly observe kiwi foraging — a genuinely rare and moving experience.
- Conservation Shows: Live feeding shows with native birds including kea (alpine parrot), tui, and morepork (native owl) run throughout the day.
- Native Bush Walk: Boardwalks wind through mature native bush with informative panels about New Zealand's unique ecosystem.
History
Founded in 1986, the park has successfully bred several kiwi chicks as part of the national kiwi recovery programme. It also participates in captive breeding for tuatara, New Zealand's ancient reptile that predates the dinosaurs.
Visitor Tips
- Kiwi Viewing: Let your eyes adjust to the dark for a few minutes before trying to spot the kiwi.
- Conservation Show: The keeper talks are scheduled — check times at the entrance.
- Duration: 1–1.5 hours.
