Overview
The Dart River Wilderness Jet is a half-day adventure combining a jet boat ride up the remote Dart River with a guided wilderness walk through ancient beech forest. The Dart Valley, part of Mount Aspiring National Park, was used extensively as a Lord of the Rings filming location.
Highlights
- Jet Boat Ride: A 30-minute jet boat ride up the shallow, braided Dart River through a glacial valley flanked by snow-capped peaks.
- Forest Walk: A guided walk through moss-draped ancient beech forest, where scenes from the Lord of the Rings were filmed.
- Middle-earth Scenery: The river flats and surrounding mountains stood in for Isengard and other locations in Peter Jackson's trilogy.
History
The Dart Valley was one of the first areas of the Queenstown region to be explored during the 1860s gold rush. The jet boat operation began in the 1990s, combining adventure with eco-tourism in one of New Zealand's most pristine wilderness areas.
