Thapathali Durbar is a ruined Rana-era palace on the banks of the Bagmati River, offering a melancholic glimpse of Nepal's aristocratic past. The crumbling neoclassical facades and overgrown courtyards have a haunting, photogenic quality.
Built in the mid-19th century as a residence for the Rana prime ministers. After the fall of the Rana regime in 1951, the palace was neglected. The 2015 earthquake caused further damage. Partial restoration efforts are underway.
